Installation of a new accelerator with modification and renovation of the therapy department

Currently, our group practice features three linear accelerators for high-voltage therapy. One of these is the ultra-modern Elekta Synergy, which replaced the previous accelerator in the fourth quarter of 2007. Elekta is a world leader in medical technical developments. This machine utilizes three different energies of high-level electromagnetic waves (so-called photons), which permits an optimal dose-rate for many aimed volumes. It integrates an electronic image system, which simultaneously displays radiation and "control movie"on a display in the central control room, where it can be observed by physicians and medical radiology assistants. In addition, this new machine makes it now possible to irradiate exceedingly elaborate, individually adjusted (modulated) irradiation fields with so-called IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy).

Especially radiation treatment of tumors that are positioned close to radiosensitive tissue and organs can be optimized by this therapy. This machine offers the possibility to be retrofitted by a Cone-Beam-CT-Unit, which enables computed tomography images, i.e. cross section pictures of the patient's body and hence facilitates highly optimized and controlled irradiation in particular critical situations. The first fully equipped Synergy accelerator in Northern Germany was recently put into operation by the Radiotherapy department of Hannover Medical School. We can now offer the same technology in Bremen

Preparations for the installation of this new accelerator included modernization and extension of the HVAC and electrical system. Moreover, we renovated the premises for patients and personnel, comprising of the waiting room, cabins and sanitary facilities.
